UTSA Sports Marketing class aims to increase attendance at basketball games

A UTSA Sports Marketing class has embarked on a campaign to help promote the men’s basketball game on Nov. 29 against Henderson State. The class, which has worked in conjunction with the athletic department, has been on this project for a month now and has obtained sponsors that have made donations.

”The athletic department wanted to see what the students could do to raise attendance,” senior Shovik Dasgupta said.

The class titled the project “Roadrunner’s Fun Fair” with the event starting at 5 p.m. in front of the Convocation Center and concluding at 7 p.m. They will also be giving out prizes throughout the game during timeouts and at halftime. The class’ goal is to have 2,500 spectators in attendance from the university and the surrounding community.

The advertisement and promotions campaign is an extensive one. The class was working on having a live radio station broadcast during the pre-game festivities, a group of students creating flyers for the event and distributing them, and distributing complimentary tickets to sponsoring business and radio stations. The group will also use popular student medium facebook.com to circulate an event by sending invites to UTSA students.

Sponsorships are the other key aspect of their project. The class is planning on having 500-100 sponsored t-shirts to be given away prior to tip off. The class planned on offering a spot on the t-shirts for the sponsor in exchange for the purchasing of the t-shirts.

The class plans on having a tailgate in front of the Convo as well. Taco Cabana, T.G.I. Friday’s, Papa John’s Pizza, and Hooters are confirmed for the pre-game festivities.

Gift certificates for Canyon Springs Golf Course and Hooter’s will be given out as prizes. American Airlines has already agreed to donate a single round trip ticket to anywhere in the continental U.S., Mexico, Canada, or the Caribbean.

”We’ve been working on this for a month, and the class has already made over $1,500 in donations,” Dasgupta said.

The UTSA men’s basketball team will host Henderson State Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Convo.
