Alysse Davis

Katy, Texas—The McNeese State Cowgirls proved the old adage two is better than one in defeating the UTSA Roadrunners, 66-50, in the Southland tournament semifinals.  The two were twin Cowgirl guards Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett.

The two Baggetts combined to score 35 of the Cowgirls 66 points, with Ashlyn Baggett doing her work from beyond the arc and Caitlyn Baggett getting her points inside the arc and at the free throw line where she went 10-of-13.

The Roadrunners answer was Alysse Davis who scored 18 points followed by Ashleigh Franklin who scored all ten of her points in the first half and spent much of the second half on the bench in foul trouble.

Disappointingly for the Roadrunners, Amber Gregg never got into the game offensively and ended up with only one point coming off a first half free-throw.

In spite of the woes in the first half, the Roadrunners held a 27-24 lead at the intermission.  The Cowgirls came out firing in the second half as they quickly erased the deficit and then jumped out to the lead.

“Even when we were down in the second half, I felt we could still win the game,” Franklin said.  “We came here to win the tournament, we played our heart out, we just didn’t end up how we [had] hoped [to].”

Everything the Cowgirls shot went in en route to a 56 percent shooting second half and the Roadrunners were lucky to make shots in the second half as the Cowgirls outscored the Roadrunners 42-23 in the second stanza.

“I have to give McNeese A lot of credit,” Head Coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair said following the game.  “McNeese shot lights out in the second half, we couldn’t get it stopped.”

The Roadrunners did the best they could to contain the Baggetts but in the end they proved too much and sent the Roadrunners into the offseason.

The Roadrunners finish the season with a 16-15 record.
