The UTSA softball team was swept in five games at the Marriot Houston Invitational this past weekend. The Roadrunners are currently on an eight game losing streak.

After two impressive wins against UTEP (4-2) and Nebraska (10-9) in UTSA’s opening weekend at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Roadrunners would drop the remaining games of the tournament against Penn State (4-8), New Mexico State (7-28), and Colorado State (1-5).

UTSA opened play in Houston against Texas, ranked number 15 according to ESPN.com USA Softball Division 1 poll, in what would turn out to be a tight 2-3 loss for the Roadrunners. Sophomore Caitlyn Ivy hit her first home run of the season to put UTSA ahead 2-0 in the top of the third inning.

Texas would respond by adding their own 2-run home run in the bottom of the third. The game would stay tied until Longhorn shortstop Alexis Bennett hit a solo home run in the sixth to give UT (11-0) a final 3-2 advantage good enough for the win.

UTSA dropped the second game of the tournament against host Houston 13-3. The Cougars (4-6), who played five games in 48 hours, would ultimately lose the final game to Texas 11-4.

A pair of pitchers duels left the Roadrunners winless on Saturday against No. 18 Louisiana- Lafayette (8-2) in a 1-3 loss, in addition to the 2-3 heartbreaker dealt by the Boilermakers of Purdue (3-7). Purdue scored three first innings runs on four hits and four UTSA errors.

In the final game of the invitational, the Roadrunners were shut-out and limited to only one hit against Big 12 opponent Iowa State (6-5). The 0-9 loss was the result of great pitching from the Cyclones.

Rachel Zabriskie and Lauren Kennewell combined to throw a one-hitter—Zabriskie threw four innings of no-hit ball, tallying seven strikeouts with zero walks. Kennewell would finish the job allowing only one hit in the fifth to senior Krista Sitka.

Caitlyn Ivy leads UTSA (2-8) with a batting average of .355 with eleven hits, six RBIs, and two home runs. Danye Holmes is batting .292 with three home runs and seven RBIs.

UTSA was scheduled to travel to Lubbock to play a two-game set against Texas Tech (10-1) but the games were cancelled due to inclement weather.

The season’s first home games will be during the UTSA Invitational next weekend. That Invitational will feature UC Riverside(2-6) and North Texas (2-4).
