UTSA fends off Troy for a win

UTSA was able to fight off Troy 81-70 Monday night, improving their overall record to 3-1 for the season.

Four Roadrunners scored in double-digits as the team found its groove later in the game. Senior Devin Gibson led the way with a team high 23 points, followed by Melvin Johnson III with 14 points. Big man Jeromie Hill started again and contributed with 11 points. While freshman Tyler Wood contributed big off the bench, registering 10 points of his own.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, as the first points of the game didn’t come until almost three minutes into the game when Sei Paye drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to give UTSA an early lead. The first half continued with both teams trying to find an offensive flow and at times struggling to create an opportunity. UTSA shot only 30% from the field in the first half, nevertheless defensively the Runners were able create turnovers and box out on the boards, out rebounding the Trojans 26-16. UTSA held the more experienced Troy to only 24 first half points and went into the half leading 33-24.

In the second half UTSA seemed better focused and energized on the offensive end. The Runners ball movement improved and their patience was rewarded as they expanded their lead to eighteen points. UTSA shot lights out and finished with a 52% field goal percentage for the half.  Troy lead by Vernon Taylor [game high 25pts] would never recover as they saw UTSA make a total of seven 3-pointers in the second half.

UTSA will play the last of their three game home stand next Tuesday Nov. 29, when they play future WAC opponent; the San Jose State Spartans. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
