UTSA athletics to begin live video stream of volleyball, basketball this week

The UTSA Athletics Department and UTSA Center for Distance Learning and Academic Technology (DLAT) have joined forces to offer live video streaming for all home volleyball matches and men’s and women’s basketball games held at the Convocation Center this season.

Beginning with the Roadrunners’ volleyball match against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Sept. 21, fans will be able to watch and listen to all home volleyball and basketball contests for the 2006-07 academic year live on the Internet.

”After a recent meeting with the Athletics Department, it became apparent that we could help them achieve their goal of extending the reach of UTSA Athletics,” Assistant Vice Provost and Director of DLAT Bill Angrove said. “We realized that we had the capability and expertise to broadcast the games over the Internet using our streaming video technology. Our staff immediately decided to make a commitment to broadcast all of the volleyball and basketball home games this year.”

”I would like to thank Lynn Hickey, Brad Parrott, Kyle Stephens, Eric Buskirk and Cari Goodyear for engaging us in a discussion about the vision they have for UTSA Athletics. We’re thrilled to be able to help the Athletics Department achieve their goal to reach a wider audience, and we’re delighted to be part of their team.”

Angrove and his staff of Milo Silva, Ernest Hernandez III, Gerard Bustos, Robert Granado, Stephen Matthews and James Borrego will provide the majority of the technical support that makes the dual video and audio stream technology possible.

”We are extremely excited about this opportunity to offer live video for home volleyball and basketball games to our fans,” UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. “Our goal as an athletics department is to stay ahead of the competition in the technology race, and we feel like this is a great start. None of this would be possible without the dedication and insight of Bill Angrove and the Distance Learning Center staff. They are the ones who are making this happen.”

The audio stream will be fed directly from goUTSA.com’s Internet broadcast with home play-by-play duties for volleyball shared by Ed Suarez and Brian Hernandez.

There will be two different camera angles for volleyball matches with a third camera possibly added for basketball games in November.

Play-by-play for women’s basketball will be handled by Stu Paul, while Jason Minnix will call the men’s games.

DLAT currently offers live digital video streaming of lectures, courses, guest speakers and special events over the Internet using RealPlayer, among many state-of-the-art technologies.

DLAT also directs and produces many video segments in conjunction with UTSA Athletics, including the weekly Roadrunner Sports Report. For more information on DLAT, please visit http://dlc.utsa.edu.
