For the men’s indoor track and field team, the season was a success, as they continued their legacy of conference championships with an eighth straight title. The ‘Runners conquered the WAC Conference Championships and now look to continue their streak in Conference USA.

“Indoors, we won our championship and that was our eighth championship in a row in indoors,” UTSA director of track & field Aaron Fox said. “We had wanted to keep that streak going and were able to do that.”

The team was led by gold medal finishes from Mike Medrano in the mile, Ronson Small at triple jump, Kerry Thompson in the high jump and the 1,600-meter relay of Nate Brunette, Darryl Wyrick, Joshua Smith and Christopher Hall, which was a program and meet record of 3:11.68.

UTSA men’s outdoor track and field team took a measured approach as the team scaled back their efforts at the WAC title in order to better prepare themselves for the National events and next season’s entrance into Conference USA.

“Outdoors, I ended up red-shirting 10 of my athletes with a little over 100 points, so we basically didn’t have a shot to win the WAC title, but I wanted to give us the best opportunity to win outdoors right away in Conference USA,” Fox said. “Then also we wanted to really see what we could do with these guys at the National level. The goal is to try and be a top 20 team at the National meet next year outdoors.”
