Roadrunners sic’d by the Bears

The Roadrunners hit the road to Waco, Texas, for their first away game of the season against the University of Baylor Bears. The last time these two teams faced off was in the Alamodome with the Bears walking away victorious 37-20. In this third meeting between the two schools, the Bears would get the last word by defeating the ‘Runners. 

The ‘Runners ended the day with 266 total yards of offense with 187 of those yards coming in the second half. Sincere McCormick scored his first two collegiate touchdowns along with rushing for 87 yards on 12 touches. Frank Harris completed 15 of 24 for 93 yards; his most used receiver being Tykee Ogle-Kellogg, whom Harris threw four passes for 15 yards. 

On the defensive side, Carl Austin III led the team with six total tackles. Corey Mayfield Jr. had two-pass breakups, one tackle for a loss and four tackles total. Rashad Wisdom had the lone sack for the ‘Runners defense with a tackle for a loss and three total. 

The Bears held their turf on offense by accumulating 546 total yards of offense; 368 yards rushing and the remaining 178 through passing yards. Charlie Brewer completed 12 passes for 163 yards and three scores, all of which were caught by Denzel Mims who had seven catches for 101 yards.

For the first three drives, the ‘Runners and the Bears could not gain a first down. On the second Baylor drive, the Bears were able to find the end zone for the first time as Charlie Brewer hit Denzel Mims for a nine-yard touchdown with less than nine minutes left in the first quarter.

With under a minute left in the first quarter, the Bears struck gold once again with a five-yard rush by Brewer, giving the Bears a 14-0 lead over the ‘Runners. By the end of the first quarter, the Bears had already outgained the ‘Runners by a margin of 148 to 37 with 91 of their yards coming on the ground thanks to a trio of running backs.

Brewer hit Mims with a 30-yard touchdown pass to cap off an eight-play drive after a UTSA three and out, the ‘Runners punted to Grayland Arnold who would return the punt 73 yards to the house to give the Bears a commanding 28-0 lead. Brewer and Mims would end up connecting on a third touchdown right before halftime to make it 35-0. 

Coming back from the half Baylor tacked on two more rushing touchdowns by Gerry Bohanon and JaMycal Hasty. The ‘Runners would go on a lengthy 16-yard drive that was capped by a McCormick 2-yard run, giving the ‘Runners their first points of the game. On the next UTSA possession, McCormick ripped off a 54-yard rush for his second touchdown of the day, and the final time the ‘Runners would make their way into the end zone.

To close out the day, the Bears would tack on two more touchdowns, bringing their total score to 63 points and a perfect 2-0 record. Looking forward, the ‘Runners they will be taking on the Army West Point Black Knights (1-1), who lost but were still able to take Jim Harbaugh’s, number seven University of Michigan to two overtimes. The game will be kicking off at 2:30 p.m. in the Alamodome on Sept. 14.
