Roadrunner Roundup: Women’s tennis nab singles titles, UTSA senior gets athletics honor

Junior Tanya Hasking and sophomore Nathalie Wallin claimed singles titles at the Texas Tech Invitational over the weekend.

Wallin won the red draw singles bracket after beating Christine Abayan from Air Force in straight sets (6-2, 6-3), then won the title in hard fought match against Ashley Ellis of Texas State by scores of 7-6 (8-6), 4-6 and 10-4 in the super tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Hasking won the black draw consolidation bracket with straight set wins over North Texas’ Stacie Blair (6-2, 6-3) and Aba Butain (6-0, 6-1). Also in action was freshman Holli Phillips and sophomores Karen Scida and Eva Silvester, but lost their matches.

In doubles action, Scida and Hasking won the red doubles consolidation. In their first match, Scida and Hasking defeated Abayan and Morgan from Air Force (8-4) and won by default over Butain and Morgan from UNT.

The Roadrunners return to action Oct. 6-8 at the Rice Invitational in Houston.

UTSA senior Hope Jimenez (Lamesa, Texas) has been named Southland Conference Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Jimenez was the top collegiate finisher – third overall behind two professional runners – at the Ricardo Romo/UTSA Cross Country Classic last Friday evening at Brooks City Base Golf Course. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 18:59 to lead five Roadrunners in the top 10 finishers. UTSA dominated the team standings, scoring a near-perfect 18 points ahead of St Mary’s (63), Incarnate Word (79), Texas State (83) and three other schools.

It marks the first weekly honor for a UTSA cross country runner this season. Sammy Kosgei of Lamar earned the men’s award.

Jimenez and the Roadrunners return to action this Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Stanford Invitational.
