Men’s tennis earns first win

In stunning and impressive fashion, the UTSA Men’s tennis team battled the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers to a 5-2 victory on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The competition started with doubles. The Roadrunners got off to a slow start by losing 2 of the 3 matches. Number one doubles team Robin Fernandes/ Rodrigo Morgado lost to Jacob Walley/ Brett Powers 5-8. Despite a back and forth game and a 10 minute break because of a disagreement in points, the duo could not answer the power shots and team work of Walley/Powers.

The number two doubles team of Adam Becker/ Andre Moreira easily handed the Roadrunners their only doubles win by dispatching Bois Barrios/ John Raiti 8-5. The final doubles match by the two freshmen Daniel Moreiras/ Max Stratmann was close as the two led early in their set 3-0, but eventually lost steam and fell to Mick Walter/ Nick Arnold 7-9.

Even with the troubles on the court for the doubles matches and falling 0-1 in points, the Roadrunners had no problem making up for it on the singles courts. Number one singles player, junior Robin Fernandes showed his forehand shots and skill as he gave the Runners a win over John Raiti in strait sets 6-3, 6-3.

Rodrigo Morgado was also able to put another point on the board for UTSA by beating Bois Barrios in the number two singles match 6-3, 6-1.

Max Stratmann picked up his first collegiate win against Brett Powers in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 and Daniel Moreiras beat Bernard Lancaster 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The longest game came from senior Adam Becker who dropped the first set in a tiebreaker to Jacob Walley 7-6, and then came back to easily win 6-0.

“I stuck in there,” Adam said, “but it’s hard with a big server. The second set I stuck with him.”

As the night covered the courts and the lights came to life, Becker and Walley traded powerful backhands, hard slams at the net, and blazing fast serves. In the end, Becker won the final set 7-5. The only singles win for St. Edwards came from a forfeit by Andre Moreira.

The men’s team will play next weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska starting on Feb. 15.
