Football inks 25 recruits in first-ever signing class for inaugural 2011 season

cokeratsigning

On Feb. 3 Head Football Coach Larry Coker announced UTSA’s first-ever signing class, which consists of 25 high school athletes and two sophomore transfers.

“I would like to start by saying that this is a balanced class.” Coker said of the class that contains players that were selected to all-district teams during their high school careers.

According to Coker the initial goal was to start recruiting in San Antonio and then expand to other areas

of Texas. The recruiting staff did just that by getting 14 recruits from the San Antonio area: DB Crosby Adams (Roosevelt HS), RB Brandon Armstrong(Roosevelt HS), OL Brady

Brown (O’Connor HS/Texas A&MKingsville), OL Robert Chapman (Clark HS), RB David Glasco (Wagner

HS), OL Cody Harris (Smithson Valley HS), DL Dominique Henderson (Roosevelt HS), WR Earon Holmes

(Brackenrigde HS), QB Cole Hubble (Bandera HS), RB Chris Johnson (East Central HS), WR Sean Luchnick (O’Connor HS/Penn State), OL Drew Phillips (Steele HS), LB Cody Rogers (Brandeis HS) and WR Jake Wanamaker (Central Catholic HS).

The remaining class includes: ATH Corey Brite (Giddings HS), DL Richard Burge (Stratford HS), DL Chris Dorsey (Rice HS), WR Nick Garza (McAllen HS), OL Scott Inskeep (McAllen HS), DB Nic Johnston (Coppell HS), QB Kam Jones (Edna HS), OL Nate Leonard (McKinney HS), WR Marcellus Mack (Giddings HS), DL Ferrington Macon (Carroll HS), TE Jade Pender (Castle View HS), DB Darrien Starling (John Tyler HS) and LB John Walker (Humble HS).

The recruits will have to wait until Fall 2011 to begin playing against other schools. Until then, they will be

busy training.

“I think the exciting part is that we will get to coach kids fundamentally and bring them along to try and reach that upside. That’s the theme, meaning we have to grow up and have to developleaders.” Coker said of the process that he and the players will go through in order to be prepared for Fall 2011.

When the team does start playing they will be playing in the Football Championship Subdivision Independent and by 2013 the team will start reclassification process to be a Football Bowl Subdivision Independent.
