UTSA is home to the only person who can say he had 300 hits in Southland conference baseball history. That person is Michael Rockett and he attained his 300th hit during a Saturday double header between the Roadrunners and the Lamar Cardinals. The rain on Friday is the reason for the double header but it made no difference to Rockett who collected three hits over the two games including a hit in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings of the second game. It was the bottom of the eighth single that provided Rockett the 300th hit. The first game went 7-4 in favor of the Cardinals who scored a run in each of the final three innings while holding UTSA at bay. Lamar’s Brian Needham came in to relieve starter Eric Harrington and picked up the win. UTSA’s Red Patterson was given the loss after going eight strong innings. In the second game the Roadrunners would make sure that the offense would not be stymied as Ryan Hutson, Jason Mohn, and Lance Brown crossed the plate to score in the bottom of the second and forced Lamar’s starter Matison Smith out of the game. The three run cushion would hold until the top of the fifth when Lamar’s Cameron Campbell connected on a two run homer over the left field fence to cut the score down to 3-2. That was as close as Lamar would get as in the bottom of the seventh UTSA scored four runs but not without controversy. With the score at 5-2 UTSA and with two outs and two on, Mohn hit one down the third baseline that popped over third base and stayed fair allowing two runs to score. The ball appeared to be foul but third base umpire Bruce Siegal ruled it fair and the two runs stood. UTSA would try to add to the score in the bottom of the eighth but the final would remain 7-2 after Kevin Clarke came in to relive starter Kris Ruepke and retain Ruepkes first win of the season. With the win UTSA moves to 20-18 overall and 10-10 in Southland play. Lamar falls to 24-16 overall and 11-9 in Southland play. The rubber game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at one o’clock.
