Dear AJ: Don’t feel single on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day. A day dedicated to not only to St. Valentine, but to “romance.” This may be a wonderful day for loving individuals in relationships, but for those that don’t have a significant other, like me, it’s a huge reminder of just how single we are.

Just a side-note before continuing the rest of this blog: I DON’T HATE LOVE. And I’m not being a bitter person. I just want to discuss the different aspects of Valentine’s Day, specifically through the lens of single individuals.

As a kid, Valentine’s Day just meant getting those tiny store-bought Valentines cards and little candy hearts (which by the way were amazing). Remember having to buy one for everyone and leaving those cards in tiny boxes? Ah, those were the simple days. You don’t really appreciate the concept of love from another individual, other than your parents, until you see it happen before your eyes. Seeing couples hold hands, exchanging giant teddy bears, and lip locking around every corner reminds us how single we are.

But do not despair my single brothers and sisters. We will get through this day. Just because we don’t have a boo in our arms doesn’t mean we have to feel miserable on this day. This is a reminder to all the single ladies and men out there: you are loved and you are beautiful. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise and if they do, turn the other cheek. You are not alone in this fight. There are plenty of us out there.

On Thursday my social media will be flooded with couples and you know what I’m going to do? I am putting my phone away and enjoying the rest of my day and you should too! Make some plans with friends and have a girl’s or guy’s night out. Go eat out or order in, go to the movies, go bowling, go out dancing, or heck, go get drunk. Just have some fun and surround yourself with the people you love. This day is not only for couples, it’s also a day for the friends and family that love you.

    Until next time,

    AJ
