On Jan. 12 the 71st Golden Globes opened to the hilarious Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler targeting Matt Damon — whom they dubbed “the garbage man” in the room — along with Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, Bradley Cooper, George Clooney, Jonah Hill and “Tam Honks”.
This is the second year Fey and Poehler and they did not disappoint, making the night both glamorous and entertaining. Some of the best digs toward celebrities included Leonardo DiCaprio’s introduction by Fey and Poehler, which mentioned his knack for dating supermodels, and a comment about the hit movie “Gravity” as “the story of how George Clooney would rather float away and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”
Several nominees came from three of Netflix’s original series including “House of Cards,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Arrested Development.” Poehler quipped, “enjoy it while you can Netflix, because you won’t be feeling so smug in a few years when Snapchat is up here accepting best drama.”
The biggest surprise win went to Adam Samberg for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy TV Series for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Best Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama went to Matthew McConaughey (who somehow pulled off a green velvet tux) for “Dallas Buyers Club” and Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine.” Best Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy or Musical went to Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Amy Adams for “American Hustle.”
Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for “Gravity” and at the end of the night “American Hustle” won for Best Motion Picture in Comedy or Musical and “12 Years a Slave” for Best Motion Picture Drama.
Although a few teleprompter mistakes confused a few of the presenters, the awards in the Beverly Hilton Hotel Ballroom ran smoothly. Even with Jacqueline Bisset’s awkward and possibly drunk rant after winning Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama, the show finished right on schedule.
