SXSW 2014 day 4 recap

 mg 5789

I had Thursday off during the week of SXSW, and I can truly say that I missed it. Showing up a bit later this time, Rafael and I were determined to try our own as street performers. Rafael had bought along sketch paper and drawing utensils to draw the surroundings where we were to set up. I was armed with my acoustic guitar and a shot voice from two days ago at the Against Me! show. Before establishing ourselves at a street corner, we decided to stop at the best pizza place in Austin, Roppolo’s Pizzeria. There, we met another singer named Mikayla who joined us at our corner to perform country songs to try to earn some money. Once we picked out our spot, we got right to work. Rafael sketched an incredible drawing of a man working security whom later came over and asked if he could have the drawing. I sang as best as I could and luckily Mikayla was there to give me a break after every song. After two hours, we had made an impressive amount of money and we said goodbye to Mikayla. We turned around and made our two mile journey back to our vehicles to drop off our art arsenal. After, we stopped at Doc’s, a bar that was about a block away from the lot we were parked in. Doc’s provided an open, fun, feel good vibe. There were sports on three flat screen T.V.’s, an outside patio, and every door and window was open to let the cool night breeze in. We both ordered cheeseburgers and fries and we were both satisfied for the price and taste. Our next move was to find a showcase for the night. Upon reaching the SXSW area, we were surprised that we did not find any big showcases going on. We tried to get into two venues just to take photos, but I was not allowed entrance because I’m not twenty-one. Feeling like giving up, we slowly started making out way back to lot where we were parked. About half way there, we were stopped by a woman who asked us if we could take photos of a band she manages because their photographer never showed up. We made our way into the venue, took pictures for her, said our goodbyes, and continued on our way back to the parking lot. We decided to call it a night around 11p.m. this time, but we felt accomplished because that day was about being a part of SXSW. We performed on the street where we provided entertainment, and for a few minutes we were a band’s photographers. Even though we didn’t get to do what we wanted to, day four turned out to be something we can appreciate for a long while. There’s only one day left on our journey to SXSW and we plan to make it something special. Stay tuned for the recap of day 5.
