New York Fashion Week 2014 at a glance

Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week has officially wrapped up until next season. Below are the top five trends from the last week and what we have to look forward to wearing this fall.

1. Texture

Designers at New York Fashion Week this year were on a mission — to create collections that made everyone around them ask, “Can I feel this?” Shearling, or sheepskin, was a hit at Coach, Elizabeth & James, Band of Outsiders and Tommy Hilfiger. Designers Anna Sui and Nanette Lepore took to the fur trend and dyed their pieces a shocking purple and rich burgundy. Jason Wu, Donna Karen, Saunder and Reem Acra also showcased velvet gowns.

2. Menswear

Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham and Derek Lam all showed loose and free-flowing pants for fall, while Hugo Boss, Christopher Kane and Ralph Lauren showcased structured suits for women. One thing’s for sure, women everywhere will be dipping into their boyfriend’s closets come September.

3. Cowboy Chic

The Cowboy Chic trend was rumored to be huge before fashion week kicked off, and designers definitely delivered. Plaid was a go-to print for designers Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Rag & Bone and Preen. The biggest shoe trend on the runway was the deconstructed boot, with Derek Lam, Opening Ceremony, Rag & Bone and Phillip Lim jumping on the trend.

4. Un-Fall

Many designers this season chose to go against the grain and show clothing not traditionally used in fall on the catwalk. Tory Burch, J. Crew, Naeem Khan, Libertine and Badgley Mischka all showed graphic floral prints within their collections. Showing that spring and summer clothing can transition into fall, the color pink took a front seat to the usual dark and muted colors of fall, with designers Alexander Wang, Open Ceremony and Thakoon adding a vibrant hue to their collections.

5. Laser Cuts

Laser cuts added hints of surprise and sex appeal to fashion week and proved to be a versatile trend. Marchesa and BCBG showcased laser cut clothing. Alexander Wang busted out shin-guard shaped black laser cut boots revealing brightly colored floral patterns, while Heart & Noble debuted laser cut jewelry.
