storm troopers

Comic Convention. Nerdy and lame might just be the first words to come to mind when you read that phrase. Well the former maybe true, but the latter sure isn’t.

Texas Comicon occurred just two weeks ago, June 24 through 26, just a hop skip and a jump away from campus. Sure, the Texas Comicon hasn’t reached the magnitude of the famous San Diego one, but it has a certain charm to it nonetheless. The people who show up to this one are true pop culture fans and not ashamed to express their love. From wonder woman to numerous storm troopers many people had loads of fun dressing as their favorite fictional character.

Storm trooper armor wasn’t the only thing that was shining; there were plenty of celebrities there to light up the event. Brent Spiner, “Data” on Star Trek was there amongst many others. Although he might be cold and logical on the show, Brent Spiner has an excellent sense of humor and definitely worth meeting. There was even the “Soup Nazi” from “Seinfeld” and the original Lois Lane from the Christopher Reeves “Superman” films.

Celebrities are great, but many people crowd the aisles of Comicon for the pure purpose of collecting the newest or greatest comic. There were many comic book writers, creators and artists there. Many at the Texas Comicon work independently, producing their own comic books such as “Buffalo Speedway” or “Sarah Palin versus the World.” Allen Bellman, a huge comic book creator who worked with Stan Lee on the original “Captain America” comic, also made an appearance.

Maybe our generation has grown out of reading comics. Maybe that fad doesn’t seem so exciting. Well, maybe video games excite you more. The convention had some video game tournaments with REAL prize money, including, but not limited to, Halo: Reach and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Texas Comicon may only be in its second year and still shows signs of its infancy, but it’s a great time with some great people. You might have missed it this year, but be sure to catch it here again in San Antonio next year. It’s the only south central comic convention in the US.
