Art buffs are never bored in the beautiful San Antonio. The first Fridays and second Saturdays of every month are the days you’re going to want to mark in your calendars to go see local art on display in the city.

Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum located at 116 Blue Star is the home base for First Friday. Surrounding galleries include FL!GHT Gallery, Cinnabar, R Gallery, Terminal 136 and Hello Studio. During First Friday, people can roam the galleries for free and appreciate the local art San Antonio has to offer within the community. Parking gets hectic, so be sure to get there early; First Friday begins around 6 p.m.

The Lone Star Art District at 107 Lone Star Blvd. offers a free art viewing as well called Second Saturday. Galleries that participate in this monthly event include Freight Gallery & Studios, 3rd Space Arts Gallery, Gravelmouth, Dock Space and Silkworm Studio and Gallery. Contemporary art lovers will appreciate the art being displayed at this event.

Besides First Friday and Second Saturday, there are other galleries outside of the Southtown area.

Clamp Light Artists Studios and Gallery located at 1704 Blanco Rd. held a “Southwest Championship Thumb Wrestling” event on Nov. 11 and the “Blanco Heat” exhibition by Tom Turner will be open for viewing until Wednesday Nov. 30 by appointment only.

Bihl Haus Arts located at 2803 Fredericksburg Rd. is exhibiting Laurel Gibson’s “Embroidering the Old Spanish Trail” until Saturday Dec. 17 and showcases her hand-embroidered and drawn pieces on 1920s transcontinental highway.

Other mentionable galleries to swing by and visit include REM Gallery at 219 E. Park Ave., Ruiz-Healy Art at 210 E. Olmos Drive, High Wire Arts at 326 W. Josephine St. and AnArte Gallery at 7959 Broadway, Suite 404.

San Antonio Museum of Art located at 200 W. Jones Ave. is free to the public Tuesdays 4-9 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Current exhibits available to tour are “Luminous Impressions: The Operatic and Fantasy Prints of Henri Fantin-Latour” which shows impressionistic lithographs from Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour (1836-1904); “Adad Hannah: Intimate Encounters” includes a 7 minute and 18-second video of a man and a woman ready to kiss the busts of Eros and Aphrodite located in Spain; and “Carlos Merida: Selections From the Permanent Collection” is available for viewing until Sunday Jan. 29, 2017.

McNay Art Museum at 6000 N. New Braunfels Ave. is free on Thursdays from 4-9 p.m. Current exhibitions on display for viewing include “Living and Collecting Mexico: Gifts from Susan Toomey Frost,” “ARTMATTERS 16: John Fraser,” “Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre” and many more.

Artpace, located at 445 N. Main Ave., is always free to the public. If you opt to become a member, you will receive invites to rooftop concerts and access to members-only lounges at public openings among other sweet deals for $35.
