The Carver Community Center will present the musical “Raisin’ Cane” starring the award winning actress Jasmine Guy, backed by a superb original score performed by the Avery Sharpe Trio on Friday March 21, at 8 p.m. Ms. Guy is not only recognized as an accomplished actress, singer and comedienne, but also as a director, writer and speaker. “Raisin’ Cane” celebrates and honors the legendary voices of the Harlem Renaissance through text, song, music, movement and imagery. “[We are] proud to present award winning actor, dancer and director Jasmine Guy whose diverse career in television, theater and film lends credence to this explosion of artistic creativity,” says Yonnie Blanchette, executive director of the Carver.

The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of brilliant prose, poetry, politics and music of African-Americans. Raisin’ Cane serves to pay honor to one of the greatest periods of cultural development among African Americans in the U.S. during the 1920’s. “I hope audiences understand the enormous contribution these talented writers, poets and musicians have had on the American culture. The writings and music changed the way we viewed the 1920’s and because of this expansive creation of artistic talent, we are still reaping the cultural and artistic effects from this body of art,” says Blanchette.

“Raisin’ Cane” features striking photos and paintings of the artists and inhabitants of Harlem during this period and is a unique theatrical experience unlike any other. The performance is based on Jean Toomer’s 1923 novel “Cane” and brings awareness about black activists who achieved what was once deemed impossible. Guy recites writings from W.E.B. Dubois, Zora Neale Hurston, Weldon Johnson and many others. She also shows vintage photographs of the Harlem streets. “Carver audiences will have the opportunity to travel back in time and experience what the Harlem Renaissance was about, but also, they will have the opportunity to delve into the spirit of the great artists and acquire a deeper understanding and respect for the legends that created the Harlem Renaissance,” says Blanchette.
