    That 70’s (fashion) show

As we creep closer to autumn weather, fashionistas are prepping their wardrobes with on-trend fall pieces (and maybe a few of my suggestions). While the rest of the world is focused on Spring 2016 fashion, clothes reflecting those trends won’t be hitting the racks for quite some time. The past is in. 1970s fashion is the biggest trend this fall season. There’s no avoiding this trend, so now is the time to be a bit more experimental with your wardrobe than you usually are.

Here are a few outside sources that confirm this fashion style and some suggestions on where to get pieces that will fill your need for suede (and fur and denim and so on).

Stylecaster has created a cheat sheet to the 1970s trend and identified the key pieces that the fashionable will be wearing this season. First up, no surprise here, is brown suede. Major runway names and affordable fashion brands have featured this fabric in various forms: a knee-length skirt, a bold jumpsuit, and a mid-length coat. Second is the peasant dress, identified by a looser, more billowy fit. Next is the wide-legged pant, both in denim and in more work-appropriate fabrics. The list finishes with fringe and bell sleeves.

You can never go wrong with a good pair of jeans. Try places like American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Urban Outfitters, or Forever 21 and H&M for more affordable denim. Remember, wide leg fits are what the runways are showing. Skinny jeans take a backseat to wide flare jeans in perfect shades of blue.

InStyle sums up the 1970s come back style by reviewing runways which featured this particular style. BCBG Max Azria featured coats that mixed a breezy bohemian style with the cooler vibes of winter, while Creatures of the Wind went in a more glamorous direction with separate pieces pressed to perfection and loose, lightweight blouses. Designers Rebecca Minkoff and Jill Stewart went very literal with their designs, Minkoff drawing from Patti Smith’s memoir Just Kids for her fashions, Stewart incorporating the “70s uniform” with knit turtlenecks, patent leather miniskirts, and double-breasted coats.

Zara has thoroughly embraced this trend as well. Visit their store or website for a wide variety of billowy blouses that will add a touch of the 70s to your wardrobe. Look for a top that can be used for both day and nightt, from work to play.

Off the runways and on the streets, the 70s still reign supreme. Harper’s Bazaar reports that “1970s Situations” are one of the biggest street style trends of the season. Pictures show women in long coats with fur collars, denim jumpsuits, and suede miniskirts. The colors are cozy and warm, a lot of browns and camels. There is a heavy emphasis on textures and fabrics, common for the cooler seasons. Velvets, knits, furs and suede’s make up a majority of the pieces seen in fashion. Also, fit tend to be roomier than ones previously seen.

For outerwear, ASOS.com has a variety of pieces in many fits and colors. Try something longer this fall, or something woolier than you normally would. Every wardrobe should have a good coat for unnaturally cold days and for layering.

This may be the biggest trend for Fall 2015 and has the most potential for personal interpretation. Are there any trends that you have seen on the fall runways or around campus that you think will make a big splash? Let me know by e-mailing [email protected].
