The UTSA men’s and women’s track teams put on a record-breaking performance in Friday’s Leonard Hilton Memorial in Houston.

The Hilton Memorial marked the season opener for the track teams.

On the men’s side, sophomores Richard Garrett Jr. and Phil Steinert set school records in the shot put and weight throw respectively.

Garrett Jr. won the shot put by nearly six-and-a-half feet with a distance of 59′ 11 1/4″. The distance shattered a mark set by Garrett Jr. in the event last season.

Sophomore Keith Benford won the high jump by virtue of having the fewest number of misses among competitors.

Junior Cole Reveal won the mile run with a time of 4:16.38.

In the triple jump, senior Devon Bond claimed gold with a mark of 49′ 4 1/2″.

The Roadrunner men won the event with a score of 153, followed by the University of Houston with 112 and future Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech finished third with 52.

In the women’s event, Freshman April Benavidez set a school record for the pole vault clearing the bar at 11′ 7 3/4″. This mark was only good enough for seventh in the event.

In the weight throw, four Roadrunners finished in the top five.

In the women’s team event, UTSA finished fourth with 74 points. The University of Houston took third with 81 points, while Rice University finished just half-of-a-point ahead of their cross-town rivals. The University of Texas won the event with a score of 177 points.

UTSA hits the road again for the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock from Friday-Saturday Jan. 21-22.
