Relationships & holidays

‘Tis the season for cheesy mistletoe kisses and witty photo captions about loving a significant other more than a turkey leg. Relationships and the pretense of relationships are at every corner when the holidays roll around. From coordinating holiday outfits to confetti-filled New Year’s kisses in the middle of Times Square with your significant other, Americans all seem to be boo-ed up during the season. The real question is who represents the single population of America, who roast chestnuts all by themselves?  Good one.

For my single people during the holidays: whether you’re single or just can’t figure it out, there is nothing wrong with basking in the holiday presence of you. As a matter of fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever had a cozy, committed holiday season myself. You’re not alone. There’s nothing wrong with taking comfort in lighting a candle, crawling under your sheets and partaking in a guilty, pleasure-filled yet seasonal Netflix binge. Wearing face masks, drinking pumpkin spice and making gingerbread houses can totally be a one-person thing. Who said it can’t be?

For my cozily-committed couples, grab a mug of cider and cheers to you. You give the world something to scroll and yearn for on social media outlets. It is because of you that chick-flicks, mistletoe and New Year’s Eve kisses even exist. Hope is what you’re giving people without even trying. And remember, to have a significant other because they are significant to you, not because a holiday is around the corner or because you really need a cuddle buddy; but even if you do, it’s no one’s business but yours.

For my situation-ships: Figure it out…or don’t. But while you’re doing that, make a point to enjoy the world around you. Labels, titles and adding a holiday season can really stress a person out don’t let it stress you. If you have a situation and a person that you want in it, take a picture with them at a pumpkin patch, decorate a tree and help and hang the ornaments; I guarantee you will find your answer.

So relationship or not, the holiday season happens every year. Whether you have someone to hold in the cold, or you just really want to have a self-serving Netflix binge, I’m not mad at ‘cha; do holiday things in the name of holidays, not a title. And finally, tis the season of pumpkin spice and confetti-filled New Year’s Eve.
