This week: Extemporaneity

I asked some student buddies of mine to partake in an experiment in extemporaneity. Omar Quimbaya was voicing his soul onto a small pad of paper one day. I then asked all of his coworkers to follow suit.
I did this for you, UTSA, so requite my largesse with readership.

Omar Qumibaya

Can you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Are you listening
to me calling?
I call and I’m all breaking down waiting for you to come around but you don’t see me. Does that mean you can’t hear me? Inside I hope you can feel my touch, it ain’t much of anything to write home about, but you’ll never know a man to shout about. I know you care like a secret we both share and it’s where I am going that brings the worst of wear.

Jason Martinez

Can you hear me?
My voice, my life
My rhythm, my life.
Are you listening?
Hear my story
from the beginning;
judgment or glory.
Feel my pain,
hear my voice.
Will you stay,
to hear me calling?

Felicia Cisneros

Can you hear me?
I’m speaking clearly
Askin you to listen sincerely
to me
you’re faking interest
no good to me like Jesus on bed rest
need you to address the situation
I’m cold I’m hungry I’m Haitian
If you care
about human life
Take a second
see my strife
I’m here starving
while you get fat
Come on my brother,
What’s up with that?

Regina Cantu

¿Me oyes?
¿No me escuchas?
Te estoy hablando

Sí, a tí rata cobarde. Inútil sin madre. O sera tu indiferencia lo que me arde? Párate, enfréntate.
¡Por Dios, enójate! Sabes qué? Mejor aún--muérete.

Rickey Lowe

Can You Hear Me?.
Can You Smell Me?
I Hope Not…
I Pray Not…

Hear the tears of a runaway
flowing through the wind
I hope Harriet brought her Gun today
Cuz’ Massah brought his
I hear the hounds barkin’ for me
Can they hear me? Can they smell me?
I’ll remain hidden in this tree
hopin’ they won’t detect me…
I’m slipping from the branch
I’m falling toward the ground
a rifle stuck in my face
I’m surrounded by the hounds
