Daphne loves Derby exclusive

While some may be crowding the boob tube on Thursday nights, anxiously awaiting a new episode of "Grey's Anatomy" or "The Office," a crowd of people gather at The White Rabbit for The Daphne Loves Derby Acoustic Tour with accompanying bands Meg & Dia, Ronnie Day and House of Fools. Kenny Choi, lead vocals and guitarist, and Spencer Abbot, lead guitarist, of headlining indie rock band Daphne Loves Derby sit down, delighted to share their experiences with The Paisano. Along with cookies and chuckles, and through the question and answer session, Choi and Abbot reveal a light-hearted and insightful outlook on their band, Daphne Loves Derby.

- Where do you find inspiration for your music?

Choi: Mostly from other music that we listen to and just trying to be that good. Some bands we always look up to, like Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie. I think those are bands that will always influence us somehow, know what I'm sayin?

- What do you hope listeners get out of your music?

Choi: When I listen to music, I just really like to soak up the emotion and kind of get my own feeling out of it. I hope people can do that with our music. I hope they can listen to the lyrics and the melodies and not just think it's another random song but be able to really know that whoever wrote it meant it. That's the hardest part, I think.

- Did you always know you wanted to get into music, even when you were younger?

Abbot: For me, music has always been something I did. I never thought I was going to be in a band, just play at church a little bit. It just felt like something that was in me. It's like your body needs water, and I need music to be in me.

Choi: I never completely planned on doing this, but I used to be in one of the crappy garage bands and stuff, where we just play talent shows. I always swore to my friends that I would tour someday, and they were like 'whatever, man.' I just had a feeling that I'd get lucky enough.

- What do you miss most from home when you are touring?

Choi: Mom food.

Abbot: There are times when I just wish I had something a little more consistent, a little more predictable.

- What would you say to help those that are struggling to create music?

Abbot: Keep writing. Keep writing over and over. Just because that song isn't the most amazing song ever written doesn't mean you're not going to improve and get better. You have to realize that one song does not define you.

Choi: I think you have to be completely honest with yourself and not worry what someone else is going to think about your music. When we went into the studio this time, we were so paranoid about trying to make a CD that everyone would like. But when we went into the studio, that kind of faded away, and we just had fun and we did everything we wanted to. I think that was the most satisfying part.

- You have probably done a lot of interviews, is there a question you have always wanted to be asked?

Choi: People should ask what our favorite kind of cookies are.

- And what would your answer be?

Choi: Probably Snickerdoodle for me.

Abbot: A well made chocolate chip cookie. It's something you can't go wrong with.

- What is one thing you would like to do before you die?

Choi: I want to go on a long sailing trip on the entire planet and just see everything amazing. I think it'd be a shame not to, because most people don't. No one's stopping anyone from just going at it.

Abbot: I want to say sky diving, but I feel like it's such a cop out to come up with something cooler than that. We've been really fortunate to experience a lot of cool things already, but I think I'd like to be able to realize how blessed and fortunate I am. To have that all soak in and to live a life like I am, so fortunate, with that joy, would be far more valuable than anything.

- What is the one snack item you would die without?

Abbot: I like beef jerky a lot.

Choi: Dried fruit is amazing.

Keep an eye out for their new album coming out in March.
