As students rush from class to class, UTSA's housekeeping staff works to keep the building clean.
"Our job is to make sure that all of the classrooms and restrooms are ready for our students and staff when they start their day." Housekeeping and Event Service Manager Sonia Saenz said.
The JPL cafeteria is one of the most occupied areas on the UTSA campus due to restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, Montague's Deli and Bene Pizza and Pasta. These popular restaurants draw crowds every day.
"Sometimes the JPL is clean and other times there is a lot of trash like in the booths and on the floor," sophomore communication major Anthony Miller said.
"I understand a lot of students come to eat here but I just wish they would pick up their trash sometimes; I always see napkins and wrappers on the ground or in the booths," freshmen art major Abigail Turner said.
Saenz said the housekeeping and facilities department focuses on the inside of the buildings while the grounds department maintains the outside.
Currently, housekeeping operations are at a standstill at the JPL library.
"One of the reasons for this (standstill of housekeeping) is because of the renovations and construction that is going on right now." Saenz said "We can't keep up at the level we normally do because of it."
"I don't think the JPL food court is as dirty as some people say, but there are times when I wish they would wipe some of the tables because sometimes there is left over food on them," freshmen business major Jason Velasquez said.
Assistant Vice President for Facilities Polo Cervantes said the JPL food court housekeeping is the responsibility of Aramark and not that of housekeeping and facilities department.
The Rec Center is another high traffic area where dirt can accumulate.
"I think the worst time to be in the Rec Center is when there are a lot of people in there because it starts to get a little gross in there," freshmen biology major Jennifer Dominguez said.
"There are 5,500 students on average a day that come through the Rec Center," Associate Director of Operations Tony Daniels said. "That really gives people the opportunity to really track in dust and dirt."
Daniels also said that a lot of students come through the Rec Center for the vending machines or to purchase a product at Smoothie King. Students entering to buy drinks or other products may create the trash found in the area.
"(The Rec Center) is cleaned from five in the morning till two in the morning everyday by seven full time housekeepers that only serve the center," Recreation Center Director Laura Munroe said.
Munroe also said there are certain measures to keep the center clean such as a bottle of cleaning solution and a towel near equipment. The Rec Center staff also does occasional spot sweeps to keep up with incoming students.
"The Rec Center is clean but sometimes there are people without any shoes on and when there are a lot people; it kind of smells" Miller said.
"Everyone has to have shoes in this building," Munroe said. "The only time people are allowed without shoes is at the swimming pool. There shouldn't be any other time where a student doesn't have shoes on."
Daniels said that the Rec Center student staff would identify any student not following the policy code (such as not wearing shoes) and advise that student to follow the rules of the center.
Munroe believes that the responsibility of keeping the Rec Center clean falls on students as well as the staff.
"Students want to come into a nice clean campus and everyone students, faculty, and staff should pull together because I believe that the campus is everyone's responsibility," Saenz said.
