Many people opening last week's issue of The Paisano found a small leaflet containing the headline "YCT Minuteklan Event Inspires Racist Scum." This insert did not represent the opinion of The Paisano, nor was it a paid advertisement.
Someone took it upon himself or herself, after the paper had already been distributed, to sneak inserts into the newspaper. This action supposedly took place sometime on Wednesday.
The Paisano has a strict code on what advertising is acceptable for the paper. Advertisements including nudity, profanity, strip clubs and adult video stores are prohibited. Advertisements for clubs, bars, alcohol and cigarettes are questionable items that require review by the staff to determine if they are acceptable.
This goes to say that The Paisano does not allow just anything into the paper.
The Paisano does have operating costs that are paid for entirely by advertisement revenue. To have an insert added to the paper, at no cost, is an insult to those companies that go through the proper channels and advertise in the paper.
It is very disappointing that students would take advantage of an already free service. The staff at The Paisano works very hard each week to give the UTSA faculty and students the latest news and information about the UTSA community.
For someone to alter the publication is a disservice to the paper and the students who put so much time and effort into each issue. If the group responsible for these inserts felt it necessary for the student body to be aware of the issue, they should have asked permission from the university and placed the leaflets in the designated areas.
As for the content of the leaflet, The Paisano has and always will support free speech on campus. Whether you're a left-wing radical or a right-wing fundamentalist, The Paisano firmly believes you should have your say on campus.
A notice to all organizations on campus: The Paisano is a student newspaper designed to serve UTSA. We do listen to your complaints and if there is a wrong being committed, we will do our best to expose it. Send us a letter, or stop by the office, but please don't take advantage of our efforts.
