Sophomore Courtney Laing posts 23 points and 10 rebounds during the Nov. 9 game at the Convocation Center. The Runners went on to defeat Huston Tillitson, 89-50.

"We could have executed a lot better," Roadrunner guard Whitney York admitted after the Runner's first game of the season against Houston-Tillitson.

Despite holding their opponent to 50 points and 31 percent shooting, York remained nonchalant about the team's overwhelming 89-50 victory.

"We think we could have done a lot better defensively-the coaches think we could have done a lot better defensively." York, who went 10 for 10 at the free throw line in addition to two steals and a block, showed she was not rattled in her first collegiate game.

"Being a freshman, to me... I was kind of nervous but once I got into the game, I got settled. It was a good experience overall. " Jordan Stark, another freshman Roadrunner playing in her first collegiate game, seemed to be just as poised as York.

"Our team just needed to score," Stark said after the game. Stark, who converted on seven out of her 10 field goal attempts, contributed 20 points to the overall score after coming off the bench early in the first quarter. Hitting four of her seven field goals from beyond the 3-point line, Stark was second in total points scored to sophomore forward Courtney Laing, who contributed 23 points.

"Whenever you come off the bench, you have to be ready. You got to anticipate yourself coming off so that when you do, you'll be ready," Stark said.

Stark had one block in addition to 20 of the Roadrunner bench's 35 points and led the team in steals with three. Guard Monica Gibbs led the team in assists with seven, and Courtney Laing and Amanda Foster led all players with 10 and 11 total rebounds, respectively.

The Roadrunners scored an impressive 32 points in the paint and went 33 for 42 from the free throw line, all while holding their opponent to only 50 points throughout the entire game.

Winning is becoming a tradition for the UTSA women's basketball team. UTSA brought in another win this past weekend beating Belmont 77 - 65 on Sunday.

The first half seemed unfair as the Roadrunners out-rebounded, out-scored and out-defended their opponent leading to a huge 46-25 lead going into the half. However, the game was far from over.

Belmont came out of the locker room determined. They closed the rebounding margin and took better control of the ball. Before the Roadrunners knew what hit them, it was a six-point game.

Unwilling to surrender, the Runners fought back. Senior Terrie Davis headed the attack knocking down one big shot after another, finishing with a total of 20 points. Freshman Whitney York, junior Monica Gibbs and senior Amanda Foster were also instumental in not allowing Belmont to bring the game any closer.

UTSA finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field and a remarkable 64 percent from behind the 3-point line.

They never panicked, and the leadership of the team helped the younger players stay focused even as they watched their lead fade away.

UTSA had not been challenged until now. They stayed poised and kept together down the stretch.

The next game will be Sunday, Nov. 18, against Wichita State at 7 p.m.
